More than a scenic stretch

The park’s official account identifies the Vjosa and the Drino, Kardhiq, Bënça and Shushica tributaries within its boundary. Established in March 2023, it puts the connected river system at the centre of protection. The Albanian park should not be confused with protection of every part of the wider, cross-border catchment.

IUCN’s June 2023 account describes the next practical work: consultation with valley communities and preparation of an integrated management plan. Designation sets a framework; staffing, funding and decisions about development determine how that framework works.

Protect the relationships

Our reading: this is an institutional innovation as much as a landscape story. Water, sediment, wildlife and local livelihoods cross the lines that separate individual projects. Protecting their connections changes the scale at which decisions are made.

The transferable question is simple: what would be lost if each part were managed separately? That is useful far beyond river conservation.
