Bring electric transport into field logistics

Venturi developed Antarctica to carry people and equipment around a polar research station. The tracked electric vehicle reached Princess Elisabeth in December 2021, where the Belgian operating team began using and testing it in real conditions.

The manufacturer’s 2023 account describes an unexpected challenge. Snow accumulated around parts of the track drive in relatively warm Antarctic conditions, creating vibration. Engineers redesigned the sprockets and improved ventilation for the cabin and electronics after the first season.

Treat deployment as a source of knowledge

The important part of this story is the feedback loop. A machine designed for very low temperatures encountered a different combination of snow, weather and working routines. The operators’ experience became an engineering input.

That is a useful counterpoint to the idea that innovation is complete at launch. Field use can expose a mismatch that a specification does not reveal. The quality of the response matters as much as the ambition of the original design.
