Exchange rules make the shelves work

A Récupérathèque is a self-managed store for surplus materials, developed within creative education. Students contribute materials or take part in running the store and use its internal currency to obtain supplies. The federation records the first Lyon store, La Récupéracrypte, opening in June 2015.

Material access is organised through a local exchange system. The rules make contributing, sorting and running the store part of keeping useful resources in circulation.

Participation helps maintain the supply

Our reading: a room full of leftover materials is only potential supply. The store adds a way to find, value and exchange them while bringing students from different practices together. That makes the operating rules as consequential as the shelves, with each site needing its own workable arrangement.

Give reusable materials a route through everyday exchange.
