A tiny sign starts a conversation

Pumpipumpe began in Bern in 2012 through the Meteor Collectif team. Residents put illustrated object stickers on their mailboxes to signal what they may lend. A neighbour can see that a ladder, drill or other object is nearby and ask its owner. The project later added digital support, but the simple mailbox signal is its defining intervention. Designers Lisa Ochsenbein and Sabine Hirsig made the mailbox the interface: a familiar place that neighbours already pass.

The ordinary mailbox became a visible index of what neighbours could share.

Give sharing a local address

Our reading: useful capacity is often close by but invisible. The stickers use a shared, everyday surface to create a local invitation without relocating all objects to a managed store. Visibility is only the first step, though: asking, agreeing terms, returning the object and trust still matter.
