Build a tall wind tower in pieces that can reach the site.
A wind-turbine tower arrives in curved wooden sections instead of increasingly wide steel cylinders.
SE SwedenIn practice. Wind of Change was handed over to Varberg Energi in 2024. Its engineered-wood tower supports a conventional wind turbine.
What to keep in view
The installed wooden tower is distinct from future production plans. Adhesives, protection, maintenance, foundations and the turbine remain part of the complete system; a wooden tower does not make the entire turbine universally carbon-negative.
The road helps define the structure
Wind of Change is Modvion’s engineered-wood wind-turbine tower, handed over to Varberg Energi in 2024. Curved laminated modules are transported separately and joined on site. The tower, rather than the turbine’s entire generating system, is the wooden component.
Engineered-wood modules are assembled into a load-bearing tower, addressing the transport limits that grow with turbine height.
Height without one enormous cylinder
Our reading: making turbines taller also makes their components harder to transport. Modvion treats the road journey and site assembly as structural design constraints, not problems to solve after designing a larger cylinder.
For infrastructure teams: redesign the journey to the site as part of the structure itself.
