A library can begin with shade and a place to sit.
A chair in the shade and a selection of books can change how a park is used. Slovenia’s Library Under the Treetops adds the organisation and care that turn that simple arrangement into a recurring reading service.
SI SloveniaIn practice. A Slovenian open-air reading initiative with recurring seasonal locations and organised book provision.
What to keep in view
Weather, season, location and staffing affect access. Books in a park create an opportunity to read, not evidence of improved literacy on their own.
Bring reading into everyday public space
Library Under the Treetops creates seasonal outdoor reading spaces in Slovenia. Books, seating and local hosts turn parks and other inviting places into spaces where people can browse and read on site. The operator dates its first Ljubljana summer to 2004. It does not operate as an ordinary lending desk: the collection is encountered where readers spend time.
Local partners, publishers, seating and selected books form a temporary public reading service without a conventional lending transaction.
A temporary setting still needs care
Our reading: a cultural service can change who encounters it by changing its setting and ritual. Comfortable outdoor space makes browsing part of a summer visit rather than a separate institutional errand. The intervention is the organised service around reading, not a claim to have invented reading outdoors.
