Cross the river without closing it to ships.
A suspended gondola connects two banks without blocking the shipping channel between them.
ES SpainIn practice. The Vizcaya transporter bridge opened in 1893, connecting Portugalete and Getxo with a suspended moving gondola.
What to keep in view
This is a historical engineering innovation still used as a crossing. Gondola capacity, waiting time, weather and maintenance remain operating constraints.
Separate the crossing from the high span
The first transporter bridge: a high fixed span carries a moving trolley from which a gondola transports people and vehicles at bank level while ships continue below.
The moving part became the small platform, not the full bridge deck, decoupling the height needed by ships from the level needed by passengers.
A new answer to an old conflict
Our reading: a conventional low bridge would obstruct navigation. A high road bridge would demand long ramps and more land. The estuary required both continuous maritime clearance and accessible local crossing.
