A mountain view that tells the time.
Walk around a mountain-top sundial. At Tristaina, the viewing platform is also the face of a clock marked by the sun.
AD AndorraIn practice. A built circular viewpoint on Peyreguils Peak, designed to function as a large sundial as well as a viewing platform.
What to keep in view
The structure and intended sundial operation are documented. No independent accuracy assessment, ecological impact assessment or tourism-attribution study was established in this pass. Avoid record-breaking claims and universal accessibility claims.
Make the viewpoint a sundial
The built circular viewpoint stands on Peyreguils Peak, at 2,701 metres, in the parish of Ordino. Its 25-metre-diameter ring surrounds a central beam that the operator describes as the sundial gnomon, inclined at the latitude of the site. The visitor route combines ski-resort lifts with a final mountain walk. It is not a step-free, all-weather attraction.
The landscape is both the view and part of the instrument. Visitors stand inside a way of reading sunlight and time. The transferable idea is to give a destination a second intelligible role, not to assume that every mountain needs more construction.
Let the landscape explain the idea
Make the viewpoint reveal a relationship with the place, rather than provide only another photo position.
