An instrument is only the beginning.
Accessible instruments are supported by an orchestra, repertoire and a route to keep playing.
GB United KingdomIn practice. A British inclusive music programme developed through pilots and the charity Open Up Music, formed in 2016.
What to keep in view
An adaptable instrument does not make every musical setting accessible. Suitable teaching, local provision and opportunities to progress remain essential.
Make room in the orchestra
Open Orchestras is an Open Up Music programme for disabled young musicians. It connects adaptable instruments, including Clarion, with ensemble provision, repertoire and opportunities to develop. The charity's history distinguishes earlier pilot work from its formation in 2016.
Access is organised as a continuing musical practice. The instrument, peers and opportunity to progress are developed together.
A route to keep playing
Our reading: a device can make a note playable without giving someone a place in musical life. This programme addresses that wider setting. Its value lies in sustained participation and performance, while the availability and suitability of each local provision need to be checked.
