A school for a different kind of life.
An artist needs a studio. A neighbourhood needs places to meet. Nová Cvernovka puts those needs at the same address.
SK SlovakiaIn practice. The Cvernovka Foundation operates the cultural campus in a former school on Račianska street in Bratislava.
What to keep in view
Studios are working spaces, not attractions with unrestricted access. Public programmes, campus access and individual businesses have separate schedules.
Keep the community together
The initiative grew out of a creative community displaced from an earlier factory location. Moving into a former school preserved more than individual workspaces: it kept people and their working relationships close together.
Today, studios sit alongside venues, a library, a garden, a playground and spaces for public programmes. A visitor can come for an event without needing to belong to the professional community that works there.
The work behind the welcome
The foundation’s account describes a continual balance between cultural aims and the costs of running the site. Community involvement is part of how the campus develops. The interesting idea is not simply to fill an empty building, but to give its users a continuing role in its future.
