Shorten the making loop

Kniterate documented machine shipments in 2020, and a studio user described working with a delivered machine in 2023. The equipment follows digital instructions to knit and shape fabric. Moving the machine, preparing yarn, setting tension and maintaining it remain physical tasks; a digital file does not remove the craft of using the machine.

A designer can work closer to the means of making, rather than sending every experiment out to a separate production setting.

Ownership still needs support

Our reading: access to production affects what a designer can afford to try. Bringing a bounded manufacturing capability in-house can make small experiments more practical. But ownership is not the same as dependable access. Delivery, material knowledge and support remain part of the production system even when the machine fits inside the studio.

Bring a repeatable physical process closer to the person learning from its results. Design the instructions, material preparation and maintenance alongside the equipment. The shorter distance is useful only when people can obtain the machine and keep it working.
