Catch fibres before they leave the wash.
A washing bag puts a small barrier between synthetic clothing and the drain. GUPPYFRIEND combines protection from abrasion with a place to collect released fibres.
DE GermanyIn practice. A German-developed washing bag documented in product use and the Science Museum collection.
What to keep in view
A bag can reduce fibre release under tested conditions, but it does not eliminate textile pollution. Collected fibres need appropriate disposal, and results vary with fabric and washing conditions.
Intervene at the washing machine
GUPPYFRIEND encloses garments in a fine washing bag intended to reduce fibre breakage and retain released fibres during a wash. The user removes collected material from the bag for disposal rather than rinsing it away.
Laundry pollution becomes something that can be intercepted and handled at the source.
Make the captured material manageable
Our reading: the intervention sits where a diffuse pollution stream starts: an ordinary wash. It also reveals a crucial distinction between capturing waste and eliminating it. The last step still belongs to the person emptying the bag.
