Separate two routes back to port

Enaleia’s Mediterranean CleanUp works with two different material streams. Fishers can bring ashore plastic caught during fishing instead of returning it to the sea. They can also hand over retired nets and other fishing gear before it becomes marine waste. Cleaning up an existing problem and preventing a new one need different collection routines.

The programme describes port coordinators, storage equipment, transport and sorting partners. That is the infrastructure behind a photograph of a boat returning with plastic: someone must receive the material and take responsibility for its next destination.

Follow the material beyond collection

Enaleia reports collection and circular-economy figures, but the amounts collected and the amounts made into new products are not interchangeable. Sorting, contamination and available processing routes affect what can happen after the material reaches land.

Our reading: the useful intervention is a dependable connection between existing work at sea and a managed route ashore. Evaluate the collection, subsequent treatment and prevention separately. A programme can make progress on one without establishing that the whole pollution problem is solved.
