Material with a visible history

Founded in Antwerp in 2018, ecoBirdy developed its ecothylene material and launched a collection of children’s furniture made from discarded toys. The company describes a process that preserves coloured particles instead of hiding them behind a uniform finish.

The result gives pieces such as the Charlie Chair a speckled appearance. The design is Belgian; the brand identifies its furniture as made in Italy, a useful reminder that European innovation often crosses borders in production.

An object that helps explain a system

The first collection was accompanied by a school programme and a storybook about the material’s journey. A child can sit on the result while learning that an unwanted object can become an input for something else.

Our reading: the visual identity does useful work. It makes the material’s previous life part of the appeal. Collection, sorting, durability and eventual recovery still determine whether the wider system works.
