Make the last metres of a cycle journey work.
The important number is not only how many bicycles Utrecht can park. It is how easily a rider becomes a train passenger. Stationsplein brings cycling routes, parking and station access into one continuous journey.
NL NetherlandsIn practice. Utrecht’s Stationsplein bicycle garage was completed in 2019, integrating large-scale parking with the railway station.
What to keep in view
A large garage is one component of a cycling network. Availability, operating rules and connections to safe routes determine how useful it is on a particular journey.
Treat parking as part of the route
Utrecht's Stationsplein facility opened in phases, reaching 12,500 bicycle spaces in 2019. Riders can cycle through its one-way circulation route and use signs to find available parking across three levels. Connections lead towards the station hall and platforms. The municipality, ProRail and NS developed the facility together, linking the parking asset to the railway service it supports.
Bicycle parking becomes part of the railway's access system rather than a separate storage problem.
Capacity needs a usable system
Our reading: a sustainable transport choice can fail in the gap between two otherwise good services. Parking, finding the entrance and reaching a platform all belong to the same journey in the passenger's mind. Designing that handover as infrastructure gives cycling a more useful role than simply providing racks somewhere near a station.
