Rebuilding with the character of the village intact
A house records local choices about porches, windows, roofs and details. When houses are destroyed, those choices can disappear from the plans for rebuilding. Balbek Bureau documented rural houses across Ukrainian regions to give residents and designers a set of references they could work with.
UA UkraineIn practice. Balbek Bureau turns field research into region-specific house design guidance for rebuilding.
What to keep in view
The photographed house is an existing reference, not a completed rebuild. The tool does not replace site design, engineering or approvals.

The team studied existing buildings and translated recurring forms into design options and downloadable documentation. The reference photographs are important because they show the source of the patterns. A configurator lets someone explore how a new design might retain regional character while meeting a particular need.
