Restore the route from curiosity to observation

The observatory forms part of Prishtina’s Palace of Youth and Sports complex. The Astronomy Club of Kosovo worked to recover the facility, with support from the municipality and UNMIK. Its July 2022 reopening returned telescopic observation to a public setting.

Manifesta 14 included the observatory in its programme of reclaimed urban venues. The initiative connected a specific piece of the city’s architectural inheritance with organised astronomy activities, rather than treating the building only as a monument to its earlier use.

Treat access as an operating commitment

The novel opportunity here is civic rather than a new telescope technology. A place that people had stopped using could again give them an encounter with science. Local expertise and a working programme are as important to that change as the repair of the structure.

The lesson for other cities is to look for dormant specialist spaces before assuming every new public activity needs a new building. Reopening is the beginning of stewardship: staffing, maintenance and dependable access determine what follows.
