From borrowing a book to recording a voice

Oodi’s voice-recording studio has four microphones and a recorder, with uses ranging from podcasts to spoken-word recordings. The library notes that the room is not completely soundproof; directional microphones help make it suitable for recording speech. That specific, practical description is more useful than a promise of professional possibilities without limits.

Other studios support music, photography, video and editing. For the recording studio, the library offers an instructor at the beginning of a reservation to help users get started, while more experienced users can book independent sessions. Equipment and a room are only part of the offer: an understandable first step matters too.

A public space with different kinds of access

Oodi describes itself as a non-commercial public space open to everyone. Designed by ALA Architects, it accommodates quiet and more active uses on floors with different characters. Residents contributed ideas through events, workshops and online participation during its development.

Studio use is free, with advance booking through Helsinki’s Varaamo service. Access requires valid identification and a library card with borrowing rights. These requirements concern the studios, not permission to enter the library. The distinction makes the invitation clearer: you can visit the public building, then arrange a particular activity when you need it.

03

An idea can begin before you own the equipment

For someone considering a first recording, access to shared resources creates room to try. That is our reading of Oodi’s wider value: an everyday institution can support an activity before it becomes a private purchase or a professional commitment. The interesting lesson is the combination of a public welcome, specific equipment and help with getting started.
