A former prison becomes a place of production
A prison divides space into controlled routes, enclosures and thresholds. When Lukiškės stopped operating as a prison, a creative programme took over parts of the complex. Reusing it gives artists space to work and the public a way to enter a site with a difficult history.
LT LithuaniaIn practice. Lukiškės Prison 2.0 makes studios, performances and public visits possible in a former Vilnius prison.
What to keep in view
Check current programme and access information. Some parts of the complex may require a ticket or guided visit.
Making room without erasing the past
The complex now accommodates events, studios and tours. Those are different forms of access, with different hours and conditions. The prison’s fabric remains visible even as the reason people pass through its gates changes. Its earlier function is part of what a visit needs to explain.
