A familiar pond, from an unfamiliar height.
A cycle route takes you through a pond with the water beside you at eye level.
BE BelgiumIn practice. A built crossing in Bokrijk, Belgium, opened in April 2016 and connected to Limburg’s cycle network.
What to keep in view
A compelling encounter does not establish ecological benefit, universal accessibility or safety at unmanaged water levels.
Lower the path, change the view
The Bokrijk crossing opened in April 2016 on Limburg’s cycling network. The route runs for more than 200 metres through the pond. Its lowered section changes the rider’s viewpoint. Tourism information also permits walkers and joggers. This is a built route, not a submerged glass tunnel.
The useful route itself becomes the attraction, without asking people to stop travelling and enter another venue.
The journey becomes the attraction
Our reading: the memorable change is in the relationship between body and landscape. A familiar pond becomes unfamiliar through one carefully controlled cross-section.
Look for an everyday route where changing the viewpoint could create a reason to visit without adding a separate attraction.
